What you get with a root server
At netcup, a root server is still a virtual machine. The difference from a VPS is that your CPU cores are dedicated to you rather than shared. Performance stays the same at 3 a.m. and at 8 p.m., no matter what other customers on the host are doing.
That's worth paying for when the CPU is busy for long stretches:
- game servers, especially Minecraft
- CI runners and build machines
- databases with real traffic
- video transcoding for Jellyfin or Plex
For a handful of web apps, a VPS is plenty and costs less. See the VPS vouchers, or read root server or VPS? to decide.
